Through analysis of CASCON, a computerized data set containing information on 52 local conflicts, the authors sought to discover the conditions and motivations in a local conflict situation that impel toward the introduction of UN peacekeeping forces. Examination of a subset of seven UN peacekeeping cases, and comparison with cases where UN peacekeeping intervention was absent, revealed that Great Power Involvement (GP) was closely linked to International Organization Intervention (IO). The mean intensity of shared factors was 94.2%, and the correlation between the GP and IO variables showed a coefficient of .805. This relationship was the sole significant one discovered in the CASCON data with a bearing on IO intervention in local conflicts. The authors caution that the correlation is a clue, indicative but not conclusive since the data do not tell us with any degree of validity in which situations the UN peacekeeping option will coincide with superpower interests. Moreover, the CASCON technique is not without its limitations, mainly because the coding of factors was a subjective process
