Blake and Mouton (1961), working with small groups in a laboratory situation, report data indicating a rather consistent pattern in the attitudes of group members toward their opponents and themselves when two groups are placed in a competitive situation. According to their data, members of competing groups tend to place a low evaluation on groups to whom they are opposed, while placing a very positive evaluation on their own group. This difference between ingroup and out-group evaluation has also been found bv numerous other investigators (Harvey, 1956; Kelley, 1951; Sherif and Sherif, 1953; Thibaut, 1950). Bass and Dunteman (1963), extending the work of Blake and Mouton, argue that competitive situations will not only influence one's evaluation of his own group and its opponents, but also of one's allies in the competition. Because they are an out-group, allies are rated lower than one's own group, but because they are more friendly, they are rated higher than opponents. Bass and
