A relatively neglected issue within discussions of conservatism is the relationship of conservative thought to that of postmodernism, a perhaps surprising circumstance given the frequently similar sentiments expressed by both; for example, the strenuous rejection of 'rationalist' ideological prescriptions. The purpose of this article therefore is to explore this under-examined relationship, by analysing the grounds both for harmony and for antagonism between conservative and postmodernist perspectives. In attempting to resolve the contradictions this seems to raise, what is concluded is that analysis is required which extends beyond purely theoretical considerations: hence, despite a number of suggestive parallels between conservative and postmodernist arguments being identified, the practical concern of conservatives to resist challenges to traditional values and institutions is seen ultimately to preclude any widespread acceptance of postmodernism's claims
