A Q‐method attitude modelling protocol applied during the Gulf War revealed four factorial attitude types: conservatives and anti‐establishment, patriots and pacifists. The types correspond to Reinhold Niebuhr's critique of the realpolitik/moralistic dualism in American political culture, and demonstrate the power of systematic political theory to penetrate to the root presuppositions of popular ideologies. Niebuhr's Augustinian Christian pessimism, existentialism, and dialectical view of human nature are discussed and criticized, but the data show the depth of his theoretical insight at 50 years remove
