The argument pursued here is that gender-specific explanatory models should be used in behavioral studies. When analyzing women's participatory behavior, factors specifically relevant to women's every-day life experiences should be incorporated. The presented model is composed of two main types of relations: the relations of sex, referring to sexuality, reproduction and consumption; and the relations of work, regarding aspects of women's experiences in the labor market. Additionally, several arenas of involvement are included in the study. As a first test of the model the life situations of two groups of women, totally opposite to each other with regard to participatory behavior, are compared. The results of this test indicate that the model is highly relevant. The multivariate analyses display women's age-specific arena preferences. Both generational and life-cycle perspectives are used in the interpretations of these results. With regard to the question of class, we find women's own occupational status to be a necessary indicator in behavioral studies
