L'A. presente la biographie de Rahel Varnhagen faite par la jeune H. Arendt, et il montre que ce texte ouvre de nouvelles interpretations de la philosophe. Non seulement il permet de mieux comprendre sa position sur la question de la femme dans la societe actuelle, et conduit meme a reviser certains jugements sur sa pensee politique, en mettant en relief une preoccupation majeure pour le social. Etudiant egalement la position d'Arendt envers sa condition juive en Allemagne, l'A. montre qu'on peut trouver dans son oeuvre une certaine genealogie de la modernite
