Rejetant l'interpretation de la theorie de l'hegemonie d'A. Gramsci dans le sens d'une strategie leniniste d'homogeneite culturelle et d'harmonie communautaire, l'A. montre que l'enjeu de la position de Gramsci reside dans une inflexion de la politique d'emancipation de l'Italie du XIX e siecle, d'une part, et dans la visee de la modernite par-dela ses peripheries a travers une enquete sur les conditions socio-culturelles de la subordination et de l'exclusion, d'autre part. Examinant la question du sud qui interroge l'unite nationale de l'etat, ainsi que la question de la culture revelatrice de l'erreur des Lumieres, l'A. montre que Gramsci resout le probleme de la desintegration sociale par la figure de l'intellectuel dont la sagesse commune ouvre la voie a un nouvel humanisme
