L'autorepresentation politique d'Athenes democratique est exploree a travers la complementarite de l'autochtonie et des relations maritales, codees par les rituels d'Arrheophoria et Panathenees. Cette complementarite, symbolisee par le peplum d'Athena, est l'analogue mythique de la complementarite ideologique de homonoia et eleutheria/parrhēsia dans la polis democratique.
