The novel has gradually but persistently attracted the attention of a growing number of students of political philosophy as a key to a deeper understanding of the fundamental issues of government and politics. In this essay Catherine Zuckert analyzes three of Hawthorne's novels for their political interest. In examining the tendency, characteristic of Americans, to escape past error by organizing a new community, she makes explicit Hawthorne's exposure of the self-interested roots of liberal government and his ideas on the relationship of public and private life. Although they are presented in literary rather than analytic form, Hawthorne's ideas deserve a place in the history of American political thought
