Many commentators on Conrad's Nostromo treat its political themes in broad ideological terms. But also noteworthy is Conrad's position on some of the more subtle problems in political theory. Professor Steinberger's reading of the novel brings out the distinction Conrad seems to have made between "authentic" politics and "politics as usual
