Norman Mailer, well known as a novelist, is not commonly thought of as a contributor to American political thought. Yet in The Armies of the Night, a fictionalized autobiographical account of the 1967 march on the Pentagon, Mailer develops a theory of "symbolic/existential" politics embodied in the politics of the New Left.
