The Horae Subsecivae, a book published anonymously in 1620 but most likely written by Hobbes, offers new light on the possible origins of Hobbes's political philosophy. The article discusses the evidence for Hobbesian authoriship of this work and suggests its author's intellectual ties with the ideas of Bacon and Machiavelli. The concern in this work with the moral flaws of the aristocracy challenges the theories which see emerging bourgeois society as the basis of Hobbes conception of human nature; the impact of the "geometric method" on Hobbes's thought is also explored
