Following a 1980 coup, Turkey adopted a new constitution that instituted a distinctive form of state corporatism. Leaders of the coup also sought to replace the old political parties with new ones. This article analyzes political developments in Turkey since 1980. The author employs two models of interest representation, corporatism and pluralism, to analyze the state of Turkish democracy and, in particular, the process of new party formation. He concludes that internal tensions and contradictions remain and that the Third Turkish Republic carries in itself the same seeds of political instability which leaders of the 1980 coup had hoped to eradicate
