Critics of Hannah Arendt's argument for council democracy have focused primarily on structural questions, generally to the neglect of both the alternative political principles she believed council democracy embodies and her interpretation of historical examples of council democracy. The result has been a certain ambiguity, which the author of this article seeks to dispel. He analyzes what Arendt has had to say about the idea of council democracy, reviews and criticizes the critics of her position, and concludes with his own critique of her theory
