That Leo Strauss should continue to be examined and explained, attacked and defended, is surely an indication of how successful a teacher he was. Not long ago, John Gunnell objected to his uses of history and tradition. In this article, Professor Tarcov argues that Strauss regarded tradition as a "problem," not as a norm; that his thesis about exoteric writing was not intended to place his own interpretations beyond debate; and that he thought of history and philosophy as being virtually inseparable
