The so-called Surgeon General's Study of Television and Social Behavior, which was particularly concerned with how children are affected by viewing televised violence, has stirred up a good deal of controversy. The final Report was drafted by a committee that had before it the findings from more than forty research projects especially commissioned for this study. The make-up of the committee, its summary of the findings, and the research projects chosen for funding have all been subjects of dispute. In this extended review article, Leo Bogart reviews the history of the project as well as the five volumes of studies that contributed to the final Report. Dr. Bogart inadvertently figured in the political skirmishing that preceded the actual research, as he points out. The Editors invited him to prepare this review with full knowledge of the part he played or, more accurately, was prevented from playing in this massive effort. Leo Bogart is author of many books and articles on the mass media, including The Age of Television. He serves as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Bureau of Advertising of the American Newspaper Publishers Association
