IN 1937 two young Englishmen, Tom Harrisson and Charles Madge, set up an organization called Mass Observation1 “to study the society in which we live.” A considerable part of that study has been the use of polling techniques. But both the techniques and the aims of Mass Observation have been quite different from those of American polling organizations. In this article, J. G. Ferraby, who has been associated with Mass Observation for a number of years, descnbes both Mass Observation methods and their application to a problem that is concerning Europe more and more—why women don't have more children
