The rise of immigration restrictionism in the United States and abroad has prompted scholars to examine how native-born residents respond to influxes of ethnically distinct newcomers. One stream of this literature has focused on sources of public opposition, with some studies emphasizing the economic costs of immigration and others assessing antipathy toward immigrants from a social psychological perspective. While empirical findings consistent with the latter approach are robust and well documented (Hainmueller and Hopkins 2014), the psychological mechanisms that underlie immigration attitudes and preferences remain unclear. Immigration and the American Ethos seeks to close this gap by developing a novel theory that elevates the importance of value orientations.
