Few generations in American history have been as prominent in the public imagination as the Millennial Generation. Despite the high profile of the generation, however, there have been surprisingly few studies on the politics of Millennials. The Politics of Millennials by Stella M. Rouse and Ashley D. Ross helps fill this void by providing an important contribution to the literature on this politically distinct cohort. Generational research can be criticized on the grounds that generations are arbitrary constructs that are really just measuring the life-cycle effects of attitudes and beliefs, as opposed to evaluating the distinct attributes of a generation compared to other generations. The authors persuasively argue, however, that the political differences between Millennials and other generational cohorts are attributed more to the unique experiences of this particular cohort than to age itself. Millennials have a distinctive generational identity that is fundamentally rooted in cultural shifts resulting from the social, economic, and political events that took place as they were becoming politically socialized
