The trend toward ownership of major newspaper groups by companies whose stock is publicly traded raises questions about the impact of investor influence on the management of the affected newspapers. A hypothesis is developed and tested: that the managers of publicly held newspaper companies will hold attitudes more like those of financial analysts than will their counterparts in private companies. Although the hypothesis is not sustained, the circumstances justify a watch for further opportunities to test it in the future
