Effective mental health programs can be developed only if public administrators are able to determine how much the public knows about the problem and what its misconceptions are. In this article, the authors describe the components of a national mental health program and the ways in which survey data can be useful to those who are charged with directing such programs. An earlier version of this paper was presented at the Seventh Annual Conference of the American Association for Public Opinion Research at Poughkeepsie, N.Y. in 1952
