This article discusses the relationship of Malta with the European \nUnion in the light of Malta 's status as an example of a 'nationless \nstate '. The article first develops the relevance of this underresearched \nconcept by locating it within the discussion of postcolonial, \nsmall island nationalism. It then provides a historical \ncritique of the emergence of the Maltese nation less stale and of its \nvarious integrationist attempts with France, Italy, Britain and, most \nrecently, the EU. Finally, the article explores the possible dialectics of \nan emerging nationalism with an entrenched two-party political \nsystem and its totalising discourse
