Bernstein provided a well‐known prescription for a gradualist strategy for the transition from capitalism to socialism. The corporatist and consensual style of Swedish policy making has seemed an appropriate mechanism to achieve such a transition and the Social Democrats' wage‐earner funds a practical example of the implementation of the strategy. But in the process of creating the funds the Social Democrats have breached several of Bernstein's conditions for successful gradualism and have not achieved any semblance of consensus. The funds case thus reinforces existing doubts about the current status of the ‘Swedish model’ and together with contemporary political trends suggests the need to re‐examine some prevailing existing assumptions about the functioning of the Swedish political system
