Consumer protection belongs to a class of policy issues which are significant because of, among other reasons, their wide‐reaching socio‐economic and political implications. As such, these issues raise critical questions concerning the means by which they appear on formal policy agendas and the means by which underlying collective interests are represented in relevant policy‐making processes. The present research note highlights several points pertaining to these questions and offers some comparative observations regarding contemporary consumer protection policy‐making in Norway and the United States. Most noteworthy in this connection is an elaborate public infrastructure for consumer representation and protection in Norway and Norwegian reliance on a relatively specialized, closed pattern of consumer protection policy making
