Expressive interjections convey the speaker’s attitude towards propositions or events and thus are a crucial part of the communication process. Nonetheless, there is no consensus on how to describe them: either by decomposing their content into more basic dimensions or by categorizing them according to proxies of emotion concepts. To tackle this issue, the present work aims to describe the function of two interjections in Chilean Spanish: pucha and chuta. Three hundred occurrences of these forms were extracted from X and annotated based on epistemic and emotive dimensions. Results show that chuta and pucha express negative emotivity and signal different degrees of the speaker’s unawareness about a proposition shared in conversation. With this work, I aim to discuss the role of expressive interjections in the co-construction of common ground, how important culture-specific knowledge is to analyze interaction, and the productivity of using multiple dimensions for describing expressive interjections
