This article offers an analysis and critique of Kadji Amin's 2022 article "We Are All Nonbinary: A Brief History of Accidents." Drawing on Tim Dean's theorization of the difference between sexual categories and types, and Leo Bersani's theorization of sociability, this article argues that gender need not be understood as genealogical, as Amin asserts, but rather can be understood as (increasingly) sociable, presenting a challenge for coalitional modes of political organizing. Drawing from the author's personal experience, the article challenges Amin's claim that feminine gay men need a positive social category of their own. It employs a psychoanalytic approach to speculate about the relational potentials activated by categories and types, and their varied appeal, as they are registered by the author in everyday life
