In 1860 Marx suspended work on Capital and spent months preparing material which was published in a polemical book called Herr Vogt . Part 1 of this article considers this text as a vivid testimony (a) to the political objectives of his work on capitalism in the 1860s, and (b) to the cultural skills and passions of the tradition of radical humanism which Marx assimilated in his early years and later refashioned to meet the needs of a working-class politics. Part 2 reviews five modes of dialectical writing as practised by Marx: life/death and other binary categories; irony and the depiction of capitalism as an inverted world; the trope of personification; voices and varying stylistic registers in Capital ; the irreducible heterogeneity of Capital as a materialist text
