This article provides an introduction to a special themed section on care regimes in middle-income countries. Over the past two decades, researchers have focused on cross-country variations in care regimes, how to improve care delivery, and how to allow women greater choice between unpaid and paid work. Much of this work has focused on Europe, but researchers have recently extended the analysis to East Asia and, to a lesser extent, Latin America. The four articles in the themed section contribute to this extension by describing care regimes, their cultural context, and some of their implications. This introduction locates them in this literature
