Young people have a long tradition of being portrayed in media discourses as mainly problematic and victims. In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization declared that the not-yet vaccinated young people were primarily responsible for the rise of infections for not complying with safety measures in place. This view of youth circulated in the media landscape while lockdowns were being imposed in European countries. Given the scarcity of studies, this study aims to understand how young people were represented by Portuguese media during the pandemic. By conducting news content analysis of two online newspapers, from March 2020 to March 2021, our findings suggest that media representations during the pandemic took three approaches: blaming youngsters for irresponsible and 'illegal' youth; concerned about their vulnerabilities; and fostering responsible young citizens. While stigmatised images of youth dominated the news, young people barely played a leading role in the news about them
