Alternative and Positive Masculinities in South African Men’s Talk About Their Experience of Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a significant social and public health issue in South Africa. This article explores how men speak about their experiences of being victims of GBV in heterosexual relationships. Eight men between the ages of 30 and 70 were interviewed using semi-structured interviews at Moshate, a men's counselling organisation in Johannesburg, South Africa. Discourse analysis was employed to derive meaning from the men's narratives. The findings revealed that men's accounts both contradicted and complemented existing literature on masculinity and men as victims of GBV. There were complex dynamics that discouraged men from seeking help from legal and welfare services. Men's narratives in this study challenged the prevailing notions of the hegemonic and violent masculine identity. Despite their experiences of GBV, they rejected the idea of retaliating violently towards their partners and still perceived themselves as “man enough.” This study gives a rich perspective on the intricacies of GBV, which recognises the experiences of male victims
