Heavy metal pollution (HMP), which is a major environmental issue in China, seriously threatens the viability of cropland. Current research into farmland HMP has mainly focused on technical aspects and ignored the social impacts. As farmers are the main executors of farming strategies, their involvement in prevention and control behaviors are the keys to resolving HMP. To determine the relationships between the farmers’ risk perceptions, technological knowledge, and behavioral intentions to control cropland HMP, this study proposes a comprehensive model based on protection motivation theory (PMT), the theory of planned behavior (TPB), and the technology acceptance model (TAM). We surveyed local rice farmers in two provinces to collect the empirical data, the analysis results from which revealed that (1) risk perception and technological cognition can significantly affect a farmer’s behavioral intentions to control cropland HMP, (2) response behavior ability and loss perceptions were the main risk perception factors that affect farmers’ behavioral intentions to control cropland HMP, and (3) there is heterogeneity in the impact of risk perception and technological cognition on farmers’ behavioral intentions to control cropland HMP for sale and food ration purposes. This study enriches the literature on cropland HMP as it identifies the processes and mechanisms related to farmer behavioral intentions to control cropland HMP, which can provide scientific guidance for the formulation of HMP control strategies
