From the early 1960s, cybernetics became a buzzword in the Soviet space, progressively gaining traction as the defining term for future developments in the planned economy. Recent studies reveal how cybernetics played a pivotal role in shaping a new kind of cyberspeak in Soviet Russia and its satellite countries during the post-Stalinist period. While cultural debates in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe fostered renewed discussions on modernism and the neo-avant-gardes after the gradual decline of socialist realism, many mathematicians and information theorists entered the discourse on aesthetics with the aim of transforming discussions on artistic creativity and art reception into a proper scientific field. This article outlines the key positions in Romanian aesthetic theory that engaged with information theory from the 1960s to the 1980s, developed by thinkers such as Victor Ernest Mașek and Radu Bagdasar. The stakes of this endeavour are threefold. First, the pivotal importance of these developments, insofar as cybernetics challenged the subjective model of art prevalent in that era, which viewed art as an expression of its creator. Focused on the mathematization of stylistics and reader-text response theory, cybernetic aesthetics envisioned both the creation and reception of art as algebraic operations intersecting with statistics and probability calculus and thus opened new paths for theoretical reflections in the field. Secondly, the important ways in which cybernetics shaped one of the foundational debates of Communist regimes in the Soviet Union and satellite cultures in Eastern Europe concerning the freedom of artistic creation, and thirdly, the connections of these developments to the precepts of Marxist-Leninist philosophy
