Resumo

The current study explores the relationship between Africentrism, mental health, academic self-concept (ASC), and academic achievement. Participants completed two measures of Africentrism (one measuring values and one measuring worldview), as well as assessments of mental health and ASC. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression. Results indicate that Africentric values and worldview correlate with positive mental health and ASC. Additionally, worldview was more associated with mental health than values, and both were similarly associated with ASC. Africentric values and worldview were not associated with self-reported cumulative GPA. Findings highlight the positive outcomes that have been theoretically linked with Africentric values and worldview and the importance of carefully selecting a measure for Africentrism. Implications, including potential areas for intervention, scale development differences between the Africentric Scale and BSAS, and suggestions for future research are discussed.
