This book argues that epiphanies in Greek literature and epigraphy not only reveal what the Greeks thought about their gods; they tell us just as much about the preoccupations, the preconceptions, and the assumptions of the Greeks as a culture. The present book is a study of the deities who are prone to epiphany, the contexts in which they manifest themselves, as well as the functions (narratives and situational) that the narratives which accounted for divine manifestations served. Furthermore, this study addresses the cultural specificity of divine morphology and mortal–immortal interaction. More significantly, this is a book about how integral the study of divine epiphany and its sociopolitical functions is for an in-depth study of Greek religion and culture. Epiphanies were employed by the sociopolitical and religious elite in both perpetuating pre-existing power structures and constructing new ones. Re-establishing epiphany as a crucial mode in Greek religious thought and practice, underlining its centrality in Greek cultural production, and foregrounding its impact on both the political and the societal organization of the ancient Greeks are the three main aims of this study
