Resumo

This study drew upon the revelation risk model to examine factors that were associated with bereaved individuals' tendencies to seek support and the strategies they used to obtain it. The sample included 242 individuals who had experienced spousal death in the past two years. Results showed that bereaved individuals were less likely to seek support when they perceived that the risks were higher and their communication efficacy was lower, but they were more likely to seek support, directly and indirectly, when they were more motivated to do so. In addition, motivation to seek support was positively associated with relational growth; however, the tendency to avoid seeking support and the specific direct and indirect support‐seeking strategies used were not associated with relational growth. The discussion highlights the role of support seeking in coping with bereavement.
