Social work is a relatively young helping profession that has been at the forefront of addressing political, social, and cultural changes. Its contested origins and combined control and support roles mean that it continues to have an uncertain status, but it has been a pioneer in developing participatory approaches to theory and methods. It now has a global role and reach and offers insights for understanding and engaging with emerging social issues relating to diversity, equality, empowerment, and coproduction
