Brexit refers to the withdrawal in 2020, following a referendum in 2016, of the United Kingdom from the European Union; it had been a member of the European Communities since 1973. The entry distinguishes between a long and a short Brexit, where the short one ended at the beginning of 2020, and was soon followed by the COVID‐19 pandemic, while the long one will continue indefinitely (unless it is reversed). The economic and political consequences for the United Kingdom and its component nations and for Ireland, the implications for the European Union, and the elements of a sociological analysis are explored in the entry
