This entry provides a synthetic reconstruction of David Held's major contributions. It shows that Held's work can be portrayed as a coherent whole, a complex narrative that, nonetheless, clearly “hangs together.” It is a narrative best captured by using three distinct levels of analysis: first, a methodological commitment to a specific view of the relationship between normative political theory, the social sciences, and, ultimately, the political world we inhabit; second, a clear anchor point in “three fundamental concepts,” namely, cosmopolitanism, democracy, and globalization; and third, a specific way of articulating the connection between the three aforementioned fundamental concepts to develop a plausible and attractive moral and political agenda
