The sociology of race and social media explores the ways in which social media platforms can reproduce, challenge, and transform racial hierarchies. Sociological research locates examples of racism on social media, including racist cybertypes, selective algorithms, and cyberbullying. Online racism influences offline activities, from racist rallies to violence and hate crimes, as well. However, social media can also provide safe spaces where racial minorities can promote positive images of their group, build social capital, and contribute to antiracist efforts. Situating social media within its larger context of capitalism is crucial to understanding the consequences of race and racism online
