Mobility systems are systematic, organized patterns of movement in the social world. Classical sociological tradition associates these systems with vertical mobility across social statuses, such as established career tracks in corporations. The new mobilities paradigm proposed by Mimi Sheller and John Urry conceptualizes mobility systems as complex systems of movement of various material and virtual objects – such as humans, information, goods – that are rooted in technological infrastructures and are situated at various scales, from local to global. Seen in this light, traditional mobility systems also reveal their rootedness in complex sociomaterial constellations: for example, a promotion to upper‐level manager in a global corporation may come with significant demands on routine travel and mobile technology use as part of a person's work responsibilities
