Ethnicity and ethnic groups are key aspects of almost all modern societies and play a critical role in understanding both intra and interstate conflicts. Unlike kinship groups that are based on biological ancestry, ethnicity is the result of a belief in common origins which may have little or no genetic reality. However, members of ethnic groups often share a sense of mutual historical origins, a common culture and, sometimes, but not always, a similar religion and language. When ethnic groups mobilize in order to establish independent political control over the regions in which they live, or even seek to create a unique political state, then they become nations and ethnicity is converted into nationalism
