Rite/Ritual

From an overview of the development of scholarship on ritual, it becomes evident how diversified and rich the study of ritual has been so far. Disciplines apply different approaches and methodologies while drawing on findings derived from different fields. The idea of ritual has been largely expanded over time to gradually include a wide range of practices associated with religious, nonreligious, political and public, mediatized and commercialized contexts. The definition of ritual continues to pose a challenge to theorists, which is dealt with by some by a complete refusal of the need to define the subject. In brief, ritual can be understood as a practice – with a more or less patterned form – through which ordinary things, places, and notions are elevated and taken out of their ordinary, everyday context. Things, places, and notions are transformed in this way into symbols which are able to convey values, norms, and ideals to actors. Furthermore, rituals often evoke intense emotion, and are sometimes used to manipulate political authorities and power issues and to regulate and regenerate social order and roles
