Path analysis combines qualitative cause–effect information with empirical data to provide a quantitative assessment of causal relations. It uses graphical representations, called path diagrams, to represent a causal theory. The predicted relations specified in the path diagram are then compared to experimentally derived empirical relations to test the model. Good model fit does not prove the model's causal postulates are correct but does make them more plausible if the model can be shown to represent reality better than alternative models
