Krafft‐Ebing's contribution to the study of sexuality is outlined and some critical problems raised. He was a pioneer of the clinical study of sexual pathology – or sexual differences – and his major work Psychopathia Sexualis is briefly outlined. Critics see him as a “conservative regulator of sexuality” and as reinforcing society's prejudices. Supporters see him as paving the way for liberal reforms and new debates about sexual justice. It concludes his work offered a humanistic account of widespread human sexual differences
