Social networking refers to the creation and maintenance of relationships. Online, the term has become all but synonymous with the use of major social media platforms. These platforms connect known and unknown participants around the globe in great numbers. Estimates of monthly active users are in the billions for Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and WeChat; in the multimillions for X (formerly Twitter), Reddit, and LinkedIn; and over 100 million for many other platforms, such as question and answer sites like Quora, or programming support sites like Stack Exchange. While these sites capture most attention, online social networking also occurs on a smaller scale through sites where membership is restricted to a named set of participants, for example in organizational networks or online learning environments. The larger platforms also contain smaller, defined internal networks, for example in Facebook groups or Reddit subreddits, which facilitate social networking on topics of shared interest
