This entry introduces how the five major religious traditions of the world – Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism – conceptualize sexuality. These five major religions are chosen because they share some common characteristics: They tend to have relatively large populations and a long history of religious traditions; they exist in many different countries; there have been consistent data collections among the religious believers; and the data are easily accessible. The entry starts with a brief introduction on the intersection of sexuality and religion studies, and then reviews some of the major dimensions of the field: attitudes to heterosexuality (i.e., abortion, sex within marriage, and extramarital sex), attitudes to homosexuality, and how religions affect public policies about sexuality. Each dimension covers the basic understanding of how different religions view or conceptualize sexuality or sexual behaviors, the changes over time, and the more recent findings on the relationship between sexual attitudes and religions. It ends with possible directions for future research on sexuality and religions studies so the two areas of studies can be enriched by one other
