Race can be defined as a social construct that categorizes certain groups or individuals on the basis of physical traits such as skin tone or color, hair color and texture, eye color or shape. The use of the term has a long history of categorizing and dividing people into different groups, often to establish dominance through oppression and subjugation. Subsequently, racism – a byproduct of White supremacy – refers to an ideology that centers White people as superior to others and includes the attitudes, behaviors, and institutional practices that oppress people of color. Addressing and dismantling racism requires acknowledging the history of White supremacy and the oppression that continues to affect many communities of color in the USA
