Labor markets are a central institution in market‐based societies, shaping the distribution of economic rewards, working conditions, social status, and levels of equality/inequality (e.g., class, gender, race). They bring workers and employers together in an exchange of work effort for job rewards. Sociological approaches to the labor market challenge individually oriented economic models, showing how opportunities are constrained or shaped through more complex social arrangements. Contemporary theories and empirical studies have examined issues of social closure, labor market segmentation, internal labor markets, social networks, and cultural capital. Future and ongoing topics of interest include the digitalization of labor markets, intersectional inequalities, and precarious work
