Celebrity, a central category in media‐saturated societies, mostly denotes individuals with significant visibility gained through recurrent media representations. Its connotation is sometimes negative, and its supposedly frivolous character is possibly one of the reasons why it has remained understudied sociologically. This entry discusses several perspectives on celebrity that clearly demonstrate its social and sociological importance. One of these is that celebrity operates as a status system and is embedded in stratification and social inequalities. Another is the labor of (self‐)branding and visibility management, which links to celebrities' commodification and role in capitalist economies. Their activism and politics are also briefly discussed, which leads to a number of questions for future research
