Gender and education incorporates the long history of suppression and exclusion of girls, ciswomen, and intersex and transgender people in schools and universities. Since the late 1990s, gender relations have changed within education. However, a closer look reveals that what is commonly referred to as a decrease in male dominance over girls and women in fact reflects a large increase in girls' and ciswomen's participation in education at degree as well as upper secondary and tertiary level, while gender hierarchies as manifested in forms of patriarchies remain in education as well as in society. This mistaken interpretation of a substantial change is nevertheless regarded as having a positive impact on the reduction of social inequality in gender relations outside of education, mainly in paid work. Still, women generally face longer working hours, less income, and worse working conditions compared to men, despite having had the same education
